February is usually the slowest month for freight, and carriers have been feeling the pinch on the spot market. Things usually start to pick up again around Marchwith new seasonal demand leading to a bump in prices.

This truck business is discouraging I recommend to not go into your own business. Just because rates are low doesn't mean taxes, permits, Insurane etc. I've invested my retirement money and the rates are so low we can't survive. It's been like this for months now. This is very disappointing we have worked so hard.

Tractor and flatbed are not payed for. It cost us How do they they stay in business? Bruh I'm in the same situation down here in Miami. I had 13k left in my bank acct after I got started but gotta keep going in it to survive. Chances are you are giving the profits of the run to the carrier to who you are leased. They find you cheap freight and they get theirs off the top and you end up with the crumbs left over.

John, I run owner ops for a living. The brokers who we are forced to get most of freight from have take advantage of the slow in manufacturing. I try to under them at the customer level but its hard to compete when trucking companies are taking freight for 1. I'm an analyst for DAT and need to take exception to the above comment.

You can go to the publicly traded companies financials and look up the real ratio of purchased transportation to revenue. Sure, individual loads and cases may vary. We try to provide good tools and information to help drivers and small companies get a fair shake when dealing with the larger companies. Then why won't you make the brokers put the freight costs on their postings and the freight bills?

DAT is part of the problem, limiting transparency. Do you ask you car salesman how much the dealer bought the car for? Do you ask the grocery store how much the gallon of milk cost? What about your insurance agent? Do you ask him how much he makes off of you? The fact is that the 3pl is developing and maintaining relationships with carriers and rewarding the carriers that provide the best service.

If you want the 3PL to publish their rates I'm all for it. How about the carrier tells the 3PL what their profit is? Absurd statement from someone who clearly has an agenda. Guess what John B. Quick, if the established 3pl's go away, so would you. You didn't lose ! You lost a opportunity!! The trucking company and drivers always lose Do business direct with shippers. Everybody complains about brokers but there are more shipping companies than brokers.

Why can't you carriers on here call them directly? Is it easier to call a broker because you don't want to cold call? I don't think a name like broker killer is acceptable. Not every broker is bad and you know it just like not every carrier is good and honest. This industry will always have brokers. CHR and TQL ruined it for the rest of us. I doubt your sales guy can fly out to a new area and secure "return" business overnight.

Not only that, almost all shippers do not want to risk dealing with small-mid size carriers putting their business at risk checking insurances, CSA scores, accident liability, etc. The broker is not going away ever. BW, I have cold called tons of shippers. If you only have 1 or 2 trucks they don't even want to talk to you. Or they just say we just use brokers.

It's not that simple to get your own loads directly from a shipper. I will never go away. You on the other hand, will die a slow and deliberate financial death at the hands of those who you work for.

Hence, we can shift our focus towards another directions, perhaps the shipper. Until then, we can only focus on the brokers Chris, because we do not do business directly with the shippers. You should monitor the comments and try to make your data more accurate. Sounds good on Sirius Radio but the users know its a joke and Road Dog Radio sounds like fools. Paul, it's true that brokers sometimes refresh or even re-post loads when they have a hard time finding a truck. That inflates the load-to-truck ratio, and the rate usually goes up, too.

There are also carriers who never post their trucks at all. It all adds up, so the load-to-truck ratio describes the level of pressure in that market. Lots of loads and not enough trucks? More pressure, a higher load-to-truck ratio, and rising rates.

Not enough loads and lots of trucks? The load-to-truck ratio goes way down, and rates tend to fall. Right now, the ratio for vans is 1. We wish it were better, and we hope that conditions will improve in March, which is coming soon.

Load boards should make the loads posted show the price paid for the load. This way they can be compared to what else is posted easily.

I've seen many times a load starts out being posted at I call and tell them I'll do it for They tell me the customer won't pay that much and they are only making I say no and keep looking. I don't pay to do a load just to keep the truck moving. Most times when brokers post loads for a rate, and you see it increase by day's end - that is the broker actually losing money on the load but he needs to cover it to keep the customer happy.

No small business owner out there will tell you operating a business is easy, regardless of the industry. The key is diversifying your operations.

I worked with brokers, I had contracts with large chain retailers, subcontracted to large carriers, and I subcontracted to Independents who had contracts. I also ran vans, stepdecks, car carrier trailers, and reefers. If you look at any successful business, they are diverse in their operations. Also, customer relations is key, go above and beyond.

Don't just transport the load, build a rapport with your clients whether it's the shipper, the receiver, broker, or other drivers in the lounge. One of the least expensive ways of growing your business is through word of mouth. I was able to get one of my contracts with a major retailer because I knew someone who knew an insider with the company. I was able to meet with the Transportation Director dressed appropriately who extended a contract to my company within a week.

I saw a lot of talk about CH Robinson who I've dealt with unfortunately. Yes they do offer low rates for freight and I often refuse their initial rate and seek more. Understanding your business and how to keep it operating in the green is not always about focusing on that high paying load or loads, it's about understanding the big picture. No such thing as backhaul rates, cmon. I hear it all the time, "oh, its a backhaul price", what does this truck drive on special roads that cost less in fuel, so you pay cheaper? It's another excuse to keep these prices lower. If we all push back and refuse these cheap loads, maybe a driver after all expenses can make a little more than min wage, but doubt that's going to happen. My definition of a 'backhaul' rate is the lower leg between point A and B.

Understand one thing, rates are subject to market forces so no two lanes behave the same but many lanes behave in a similar fashion. Most markets except Miami have at least one head haul lane. For example, Denver to Albuquerque can pay head haul rates. Who is leading this group? This is a setup for failure. Open up your eyes guys survival of the fittest and you clearly have the upper hand use it. Park those trucks and watch the change take what your due.

Key-stoning is the key to pricing your service to maintain profitability. Take your operating cost and double it, that is your service price -what you charge per mile to cover your operating cost truck and trailer payment, truck and trailer maintenance, insurance, taxes, fuel, driver pay etc This is just the way you run a business -for profit. Now many will post back that that's all good on paper and in reality you can't get those rates. Well what I've just outlines is for a reason, it's to show the systemic problem: All without having direct shippers to work with.

Don't get into trucking because your dumb and figure since you can't find any other job but know how to drive a truck that you should get in the game when you can't figure out operating cost, and know how to price your service, and know how to keep the associated cost down. The primary killer is buying too much truck when market rates suck. Build a direct book of business with the mom and pops, and mid size shippers in your base area. If you didn't know -the large shippers can't afford to manage their capacity and waste their time with companies that only have one truck.

That's why they rely on larger carriers with more than 5 trucks and brokers to handle their capacity. Build relationships with Brokers. You need them when you are away from your base area.

They have visibility and access to loads you can't see. So when it comes to shippers and brokers, they know what the transportation operating cost is on a per truck basis and what the associate profit margins are. They have the capital and all the sophisticated software programs to perform pricing analysis -this gives them the competitive edge.

That you need to cover your operating costs and also make a profit. The key is to have a balance of shippers and brokers, and only run to make a profit. And do it running less miles and making great profit. If that means keeping the truck parked until you get your rate then do so. And you should be able to cover the fixed expenses when the truck is not running -short of that get out of trucking. So stop crying about everybody running cheap freight and forcing you to go out of business.

Get a full time job that pays better than trucking. Only run your truck when rates soar and use part time drivers. Then you need to go out of business because to be in business you have to create business and that involves building relationships.

If you suck at dating and marriage then you will suck at being successful in trucking -plain and simple. So for shippers and brokers this means more money in their pocket. Shippers know what rate they want to pay for a load and that rate is different than what their sophisticated software tell them.

Let the shippers pay the brokers on top of the truck rate. That's how it's supposed to work. Short of that don't cry, don't blame the broker. Oh -you can't sue them because the trucking industry is deregulated. Vote for government regulation in such a critical industry and rates will soar and everyone will will make money. If we could only get the dumb owner operators to park their truck until they realize how to do business we'd be okay. You put the nail on the coffin. It's that simple stop running when you are not getting paid.

You are too concerned meeting your bills and payments, that you will run as long as your expenses are cover. With social media, it will not cost you a dime to get the word out there. You will see just how that one day, affects their business in relatively compare to yours. It's not even a comparison, they will feel the pain more than you will.

Before you know it, week into it, rates will go up drastically. To conclude, all this is possible, it's a matter of whether you have the gut or not to park your truck. You have to take a risk in order to gain something. The greater the risk the greater the reward. Due to an overwhelming response to this thread, it is my plan to take on 5 new owner operators. This effort is based on economic markers I have spotted in the industry.

With the political climate the way it is our industry is ripe for expansion. Wall Street experts agree. The Fortune Trucking Companies have been posting record profits and even though we only have access to the crumbs left behind, some of those crumbs are highly profitable.

In my office, there were people booking and brokering loads. I was, and still am, honest; I was never trying to cheat anyone out of anything, I was simply trying to do a good job.
